becoming professional PHP developer

although I don't have that much experience at PHP, I have really much experience at other types of programming (C, C++, Delphi, Assembly, Perl, Java, ... DirectX, OpenGL, Win32, game-specific etc.) and so I've found PHP quite easy, although there are still much for me to learn,.But now I think I would be ready to actually earn some money with my skills.

So my guestion is, how can one get into bussiness as freelance PHP coder? I've found Rent A Coder site but it seems like there are so many people in there I will never get a job especially when I'm unrated. So are there any other options? Please give me some hints on how to find some jobs?

As for how to become a professional coded - well that depends where you live

I'm in the UK and at the moment there is a slow takeup of php over asp.

My best advice would be to do some work on existing project (like those at sf.net) and gain hands on "experience". The other thing that you will need to bear in mind is that companies will generally be looking for at least 1 years experience.

I was lucky, i found a small development company that took me without any php experience and let me learn on the job, (oh yeah and also make mistakes on the job)

Until php becomes a accepted as a web scripting language by more companies then we are all in the minority (as per se ASP VB etc), but don't give up hope - its happening (albeit sloowly)

thanks 🙂 well, right now I'm developing my own PaidToRead program, you know, the ones like www.SoRedTheRose.com , www.GoldSalary.com etc. I started last thursday and it's in the half way I think. I decided that it would be a good first project, and maybe even a good addition to my showcase, when I get it up and online 🙂 and might even get a little extra cash 😃
