i get an error that says that there is an unexpected $ in my code.

except the line that the error points me to is the line with the closing php tag "?>"
any ideas?

maybe you forgot a " or a ; at the end of a line, even possible that
it's several lines up

Often this is either caused by unclosed curly brackets. A string that is not terminated with a quote can be the reason, too.

Indentation helps to get the brackets matching (or simply counting all opening and closing brackets may do), while an editor with syntax highlighting is a great help to check if all strings are quoted properly.
