How long have they been on the page?

I want to develop a way to determine how long a user has looked at a page. so from the moment they enter the page to the moment they leave or close the page.
I need a time in which I understand and a time out which i'm trying to figure out

Theres maybe two ways..

One is Javascript. Probably would be more accurate.

Or PHP
Which all i can think is to have a variable on when they entered. And one when they left which would have to be on another page. But if someone either left the site. Or closed the browser this would be inaccurate
