URL Rewrite

I recently read an article talking about exploding the url using / so you can query accordingly. This would help generate user friendly urls.

My question is how do you get the user to show this:

www.thissite.com/test/this

In the first place? I know mod-rewrite only rewrites it after the fact. I want all my links to look like the one above when you view the website. Is there a script or would you manually setup all the links that way?

You could do either, either just hand-code the <a hrefs to be <a href="/scriptname/var1/value1">

Or write a script ( much harder ) to go through and change all the links before it's spit out to the browser.

You'll need an Apache htaccess file most likely to get the web browser to know that /scriptname is a script and not a directory...

Thanks for the reply. Doesnt apache go back down the url with $PATH_INFO? If so cant i just use a forcetype and when it hits a section that it sees a page that can be executed by php it would run it? Or am I completely off base here?

Yeah, Apache ( at least on *nix ) will go back down the path, and you can use a ForceType.

I woudl just put the ForceType in .htaccess file, but you don't need to, if you have access to config file

I think I will use htaccess file just in case I wont have access to the config file sometime down the road. Which I most likely wont at some point and time.

So just to backtrack here if I had a url:

www.thissite.com/test/id/12

Apache would look backwards and see if anything can run with the forcetype right? So 12 wouldnt, id wouldnt but test would and therefor it would run it correct? Just want to make sure Im looking at this correctly
