Instantmsg Help

I have built a small community for a RPG site.

In that community you can send messages to eachother like anyother community. But my question is..

If the msg isn't read it got the value of 1 and if it's read it has 0. How can you set the msg to 0 when you hit the link for reading the msg... I need it to update the field "Read" from 1 to 0 when the msg is read.. How?

add somewhere on your page php code that goes like

if read=="true" then
execute a update statement that changes read from 1 to 0
