sorry i mightnt have been very clear as to what i am trying to do

I have a variable $carpic which when echoed gives
C:\temp\a.txt

I need to cut this string so that $carpic='a.txt' i.e. just the filename

can anyone provide a method to do this?? The path lengths will vary so i need a method that will find the last backslash and then take everythingg to the right of it.

Give this a try:

$carpic = "C:\\\temp\\\\a.txt";
$temparray = explode("\\\", $carpic);
$thispos = ((sizeof($temparray)) -1);
$carpic = $temparray[$thispos];
echo $carpic;
