detecting the enter key..(and some other things as well)

hi there my fellow php'ers..

here's some quick question,
hopefully it will help me (and others)
to learn more about this mysql - php thingy..
ok here goes..

1. i know you can put large text input (like a news..), by changing the table's field attribute from 'varchar' to 'text'.
   is there any other type which is better..??

2. how do i make my textarea in a <form> form to recognize
   when the user hit the ENTER key to go to another line. is there
   any code that can convert the enter key to a "<BR>"?

3. is there any way i can return out the value of a text
   used in a link. say for example.. mylink links to a php file,
   it would return the word 'mylink'. i know you can do this
   manually.. (like below) but is there any function or way
   to do this.. or perhaps this just could not be done..

4. anybody knows how to say detect a highlighted word in a textarea? i want to manipulate the text by adding html tags to the highlighted text, just like some forum system..

okay, i can't answer to all the questions, but here are those i know :

1) it depends on the size of text you want to store, use either text, or bigtext.

2) the ENTER in a textarea is a newline, which can be converted to <br> using nl2br()

3) i don't understand the question, sorry

4) i don't think php can know if the text is highlighted or not.
maybe in javascript.

OK question 3 is all about stripping out the link words from hyperlinks in an html page

nl2br is very simple
you just do that : $newstring=nl2br($oldstring);
and it will return newstring with all "enter" of your textarea converted in <br> so you can see the newlines in HTML.
