session_start() results in bus error

With the following install:
PHP Version 4.2.2
System SunOS latimer.lsait.lsa.umich.edu 5.8 Generic_108528-14 sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraAX-i2

any call to session_start or session_register, or any other session variable results in the following error message:

child pid 2340 exit signal Bus Error (10)

Any help would be appreciated.
