How do I use a local version of PEAR if our server automatically uses it?

Hello,

I'm new here, but I've read the guidelines and hope I won't offend/show myself up as incredibly stupid.

I'm trying to get the latest distribution of PEAR to work, so I can use DB_DataObjects for a project. Unfortunately our university server has an out of date version (I understand PEAR is distributed with PHP now?) and so even if I require_once the local file, I'm getting lots of errors that look like:

"Fatal error: cannot redeclare class pear in bla bla bla on line 72"

Anyone got any ideas of how to fix this please?

That is not neccessirly a pear issue

Cannot redeclare ... is a coding issue - you'll need to check where you're first cllaing the function

Anyway back to the orignial question .. about pear.

You'd need to get the university to run the command

"pear update all" that will update the packages it has to the newer version

Thanks very much for your reply.

I have emailed the university webmaster and asked that the PEAR stuff be updated (I did this last week) -- as yet have had no response from them at all though.

I think I've managed to solve the problem of the PEAR thing by using ini_set() and giving the appropriate local folder so that it finds the new version of PEAR, but now am having lots of trouble getting the generator for DB_DataObjects to work.

Is DB_DataObjects a popular PEAR package -- is there any help listing for it that Google can't find?
