newb upgrading php

Hello all,

I need to upgrade php on my server.

OS - Red Hat 7
Webserver - Apache Server
PHP - 4.0.3
MySQL - 3.23

I am unfamiliar with how to upgrade php on linux and could use a lot of help.

One of my problems is that my server doesn't use the normal directory structure (for security reasons). Can anyone tell me how this will affect the installation?

I am a complete newb at this so here are my newb questions:

How do I uninstall and upgrade PHP?
If I need to how do I do the same for MySQL?
If I only upgrade PHP will that affect MySQL?
Is there a tutorial I can follow anywhere?

Since you are using RedHat I will assume most of these were installed with RPMs. In that case you might want to read up on rpms, to upgrade you simply need to find the new rpms and run "rpm -Uvh package name" or "rpm -Fvh package name". If you would like to use the configure/make method, you can use "rpm -e package name" to remove the packages installed and then follow the instructions for configuring/making the new files. Try "man rpm" for the options of the rpm command and check out redhats site, maybe linux.org for some howtos, and the sites of the programs you are wanting to install.
