grouping data with mysql php

This may be simple, but I can't find any way to do it. I have a table with faculty, and then a table with activities. The activities table contains the personid's of the faculty who sponsor the activity. I want to be able to group the data so that the name of the activity is shown and then the names of the faculty sponsors. I have been able to get the following

Activity 1 Sponsor
Activity 1 Sponsor
Activity 2 Sponsor
Activity 2 Sponsor
Activity 2 Sponsor
Activity 3 Sponsor

or the activity with the first sponsor listed but not the rest.

What I want is

Activity 1

Sponsor, Sponsor

Activity 2

Sponsor, Sponsor, Sponsor

Activity 3

Sponsor

I have about 20 activities, so I don't think doing a seperate sql statement for each one is the answer. If you have any ideas let me know.

you need to do this by programming ...
either you keep your query like it is and work with '$old_var' ...
or you split your query in 2
the first getting the activity, the second getting all the info you want for that activity only.

i prefer the first solution.
just add something like if($row['activity']!=$old_activity)
echo $activity.'<br>';
echo 'all the others info you want'

just group by and order by correctly in your query.

that should work.

that's just gross explanation here, but you should be able to work out what you really want from this.
