Don't want to make money, eh? Don't hear that very often. If you want to code for yourself, think of stuff that would be useful for you. For example, my mom had a bunch of recipes from South America (using Celcius) and she needed a chart of conversions from Celcius to Fahrenheit so she could make these baked goods. I wrote a little php function in combination with a loop to get her the conversion chart she wanted.
Another idea: I have a ton of clothes (i love shopping and I like dressing well), but sometimes, I don't know what to wear. I was really close to making a php script that would randomly select shoes, pants, belt, shirt, and jewlery for me to wear that day. Then, have a backend area where I could add more clothes (as I got more), get rid of stuff I no longer wear, upload pictures, etc.
I've made a dynamic picture gallery for my 1 year-old nephew. You could make a shopping cart just for fun. Content management systems. A script to keep track of your finances. A library of your .mp3's with links to the files (if you're working locally). A contact management system (could be very easy or extremely complicated depending on how good you wanted it to be and how many/what features). A quiz for people to see how well they know you. Stock watcher with email and/or SMS notification when certain stocks reach certain prices. A message board. Polls. A newspaper site (has potential for a TON of features).
These are just ideas off the top of my head. Look around, see what other people have done. Go to hotscripts.com and check out their scripts for ideas. Find out what would be useful for you or someone you know, then make it.
