Ok, I know I will get some disapointed posts but this is about the friends show. When you try to explain what you do to people what kind of repsonse do you get?

I normally get a dumb smile and then after a couple seconds a "whatever".

Hmm, I'm not even sure what I do myself, sometimes. But most people can understand 'works with computers' in a general sense; I think most people think I'm a repairman (which I am to a certain extent, particularly with residential clients.)

My favorite thing? Getting to a location that's at least 20 miles from here and finding out that the issue is basic 'pilot error'....

I've found that trying to explain what I do to non-technical people is about as fruitful as explaining Nietzche to a 8 year old. This is my typical response when I get asked:

Dolt: So, what do you do?
Me: Hmm, what do I do? That's a good question.
Dolt: Haha. Good answer. Want a beer?

It's so much easier than:

Dolt: So, what do you do?
Me: I adminster servers, and write web applications using various scripting technologies and databases, mainly PHP and MySQL.
Dolt: blank stare Umm, yeah.

But after getting the blank stare I sometimes just shrug and say "If I do my work right, you'll never see any of it."
