Form submission & long running code

Hi all,

I've got a form that does the job of confirmation - that is when a user responds to an email message sent earlier, they are directed to this form and when they submit the form, I run a moderately long process (not more than 30 seconds at the most).

The problem I think is that people click on the submit button once, which starts "the process" and being impatient, they click on the submit button again. My code sees that they have already submitted and gracefully exits, not running "the process" a second time.

The question is, does "the process" that began running the first time and had not finished by the time they submitted the second time continue to run or what?

1.run top (or perfmon) to observe the httpd, and display the processes by CPU order?

write process start and end time to a file or to stdout as a part of the PHP script?
If the long period is due to sending an email, revise your script to just receive the input and then output a "we've got your message". Then, batch email the input?

Here's what you do. On the receiving page, you do this:

print "<P>Processing</P>\n";
flush();

That should put out the headers and your message of processing. note that due to the way some web browsers process partially delivered pages, it's a good idea to have something like the paragraph markers up there to tell the web browser to render this part.
