array("*") what does this mean

I am taking apart a php sql class in order to learn how it works, and how to build a class of my own. Inside the class is this line:

_table_fields = array("") 'initialize to a default value of ""

what i am not sure of is what does the "*" mean, do, stand for...?
i can find nothing in any book or anywhere online about this. HELP PLEASE! 🙁 😕 🙁

The line creates an array with just one element.

$_table_fields[0] = '*' ;

Presumably so that the default would be

SELECT * FROM tablename

which would select all fields.
