Question about LIMITING

Hi,

I've written a script that searches a database with a limit of 10.
This is to create multiple pages with numbered links

I did something really wrong however, when a numbered link is clicked, the search-script is called again and a new search is done.

There's an array that holds the 10 items. These items are displayed. There's no-more in the array, so i have to search the database again using a different offset right?

I am confused

Yeah, you have to search each time. So, for example

//max results
$max = 10;

$query = "SELECT * FROM my_table WHERE name='$some_name' LIMIT $from, $max";

//grab it

//Make the next from value

$from = $from+$max;

//Have a link

And so on.

If I'm following you correctly, yep, offset is what you need.

You can do something like:

href="search.php?page=2"

and then

$offset = $page * 10;

SELECT * FROM wherever LIMIT $offset, 10

That should return rows 21-30. Note: the first page will be "Page 0" in the above.

I got that and wrote it as well!

But my (thinking) problem is this:

Search 10 from offset 0

Results:

rec 1
rec 20
rec 35
rec 44
rec 67
rec 68
rec 76
rec 89
rec 94
rec 102

those are stored in an array with mysql_fetch_array.

Then,

starting a new search from offset+10 (when page 2 is clicked) would start at 10 and the results could be the same because the second rec from the first result page is rec 20 etc.?

Am i making sense here?

Ok, so searching the database like for instance this:

SELECT * FROM maintable WHERE description LIKE '%$keyword%' LIMIT $offset, $limit ORDER BY id description;

would sort the database by id and description, and select the first 10? so that changing the offset to $offset+10, and then doing the same search, would come up with rec 11-20?

But is the last thing i said true?

Can you give me an example?

Does ORDER BY order the database first before SELECT?

And what should be ordered, the id and description? Because basically if someone types 'tree' for instance, all records with the word 'tree' in their description should be orderded by description right?, so that adding for instance 10 to the offset would work?
