Accessing a POP server from PHP

Is there anyway to access a POP server from PHP? I am trying to set up some kind of mailing list that can receive mail as a confirmation of membership, but I need a way to get the reply to my php script.

I presume this is how most mailing lists work. If not, please enlighten me.
