Best way to hire a PHP/MySQL guru with strong management experience?

Hi,

What is the best way to hire a PHP Guru? We a profitable Media Metrix 150 company located in Boca Raton, FL and is in the market for a "best of the best" Director of Internet Operations who is going to be responsible for project Management in a LAMP development setting

The problem is, we posted jobs on sites like Monster.com and Hotjobs.com with very little success - we received almost 1,000 resumes in 1 week but 90% are all MICROSOFT people.

The other 10% are either great in the technical end but lacking in management experience or good in management but not strong with technology development.

What do you think is the best way to find and identify qualified a qualified "CTO-type" that has a strong background in Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP (LAMP) project management and is excellent in managing people?

Besides Monster and Hotjobs, which job sites out there allow one to target the LAMP crowd specifically?

Also, the ideal candidate must be physically located in Boca Raton, FL or is willing to relocate there.

Your thoughs and comments are very appreciated.

I think you should look through your applicants, and pick the few with the best programming skills. Try talking to and interviewing each individually, have them talk with your team- management skills can be acquired or developed. I would recommend finding a good programmer with strong language skill who seems intelligent, and give him or her a shot.

What i suggest is go to Freelancer Sites. If you dont know any try google

Or some Forums that specifically for Freelancing. You could try Tutorialforums.com they have a Freelancer Forum.

But most Forums will mainly have younger people that will do anything to try and get a job so you must also watch that to.

Have you tried asking your question on some OSOS sites? Like maybe the chat@freebsd.org mailist, or one of the many Linux sites?

I know how you feel. The company I work for was looking for a webmaster to work with us PHP coders so they didn't NEED to know PHP but it is a plus. The add also says strong HTML skills, NO WYSIWYGs yet every resume has Microsoft this and Microsoft that and Frontpage and dreamweaver, etc.

some just give examples of Flash, but that tells us nothing about their HTML skills.

do google searches for PHP guru, etc.

Those job sites are both a blessing and a curse for both job-seekers and employers. The job seeker could be perfect for the job, but because 1,000 other people applied, they get lost in the sea of candidates.
For the employer, you may find the perfect person for the job, but only after reading through thousands of resumes that don't even have the qualifications you are looking for.

As a PHP/MySQL/Perl programmer, it was hard for me to find work for the same reasons. 99% of the employers were looking for Microsoft technologies.

Are there any PHP user groups in your area? If so, you may want to let them know what you're in the market for - I know of a few instances where a local Mac user group posted jobs in their newsletter and mentioned them at their meetings.

The poster who mentioned freelance sites is on to something, I think. The one I've had good luck with is agaveblue, but be sure to mention you're looking for less "MS" and more open source experience. Also try posting to some of the open source community boards, as well.
