getting the day's name..

hi there all....
hope you guys are having a great time coding..
here's a question that has been puzzling me for the last few days

How do you get the day's name (example, Monday, Tuesday..etc)
from a given date...

say for example,
i want to know what day is it, on 20 february 2004.

I read the manual and it only says about getting the CURRENT date and time.

Any idea??

from the date given..

example, i want my code to tell me, what day is it
on the 5th of may, 2009.

anyway, is that even possible...??

Try this:
$get_day = strtotime ("5/20/2003");
echo date("l", $get_day);

Reference: function.strtotime.html (PHP manual)
If using a variable for the date, be sure that it is in a valid format.

How is the original date being generated? Is it by user input or from a database or file?

it's by user input...
actually, i created a form, with select for month and year, then theres this clickable date (1 - 31)

so when the user submit the form, to check out the date,
it will go to that date...

so basically, 2 december 2004 will go like 2 12 2004

now i just need the day's name... just to make it look good,
and to help to know what day it is on that particular date.

i'll try the code here...

Just tested your date format of 2 12 2004 and it failed. You will need to modify the way you are concatenating the month day and year to include the / separator.

owh.. i was aware of the date format,
so i make another variable that will have the combo for the function to work..
and the day of the date was precise...

owh.. there's this little bug though..
i wouldnt personally call it a 'bug' :p

it's when you enter 02/29/2003 (loop year)
it will return the day for 1st of march...
(the 29th on 2003 doesnt really exist)

but i dont have to worry,
cause my calendar would not produced a 'illegal' date.. :p

If you're getting the pieces of the date (day, month, year) separately, then you don't need to put them together to make a string to pass to strtotime(). just use [man]mktime[/man] instead.

And yes, 2003-02-29 is 2003-03-01 - it's 2003-02-28 + 1 day! It's not a bug, because it's supposed to work that way - it's deliberately built into the code so that you don't have to worry about such things (and because astronomers and national observatories start the year on January 0).

Since you found the "bug" (invalid dates entered) I guess you're going to add the checkdate function, right?

checkdate ( int month, int day, int year)

Then, if it is a valid date, you will generate the day of the week or else create an error message and return the user to the date selection form.

You probably already did this, just adding it for anyone who may be watching this thread.

yup.. i did use the checkdate funtion..
it is a nice tool for me for debugging..
(to check wether my code produce a 'legal' date)

and of course,
i make sure that user dont enter any wrong date combo,
so i set up a list field (jan - dec) and a year field (2000 - 2021)
and for the date.. i generated .gif image..
from 1 - end of the month date.
so i guess i shouldnt worry much about having to produced a wrong date combo..

anyway.. i really appreciate ur help..
at least, now i can know when i was born..
and of course.. what day is my birthday on 2020..
