Yes, you will have to install libpng, libjpg, freetype, and ttf for gd to install properly. For more information on installing gd and additional libraries to create images and text, see http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.image.php
the function imagesetthickness doesn't seem to work. I get an error saying that the function is undefined. Could this be a bug?
Its not a bug, it means that you dont have the libraries installed. Its looking for the function definition in gd but it isnt there. When it is installed properly it will work.
Does anyone know imagemagick? Is it a program that works in the same way as GD?
I havnt used imagemagick too much but mostly its for modifying images, (changing their formats, resizing, draw on an image...) rather than creating them. see http://www.imagemagick.org/ for more info.
