System command returns string

when using a $result = system(); command like ls for example it returns 1 string for the whole command! how to I go about putting the results of this command into an array so I can loop through and print a newline after each listing?

Ahhhh there is the equivelent of the perl split function! Thanks for that Diego25

Consider this though $result = system('last');
the output has alot of whitespaces in it and if I split on the whitespace then the output becomes wierd and illegible (kinda like my post eh )

How to get each seperate (system) line to become an equivilent (html) line?
