How can I speed up the process of uploading files?

I tried to upload a 7MB file. I realise that when I click on submit button, the page seems hang to the end user. but actually it is getting the file. Is it possible when click on submit button, the page goes off quickly and display a Please Wait message while getting the files?

Oh yes by the way, can i compare the time for uploading files through web application with transferring files directly to the web server computer using window explorer? The web application is used in intranet. So my boss try to argue with me that since it is intranet, the speed for uploading files thru web app and the speed for transferring files using window explorer should not be so much different. Is that true?

add a pop up window wuth javascipt that says "Please wait while your file is being uploaded". And then close it with window.close() on unlaod.
