Help with MySQL/PHP Database

Hi, I am new to posting here but have been lurking for a while and got tons of help in the past by reading replies to other peoples problems, now I have one of my own.

I am fairly new to this so please bare with me. I am helping a friend make a website for his band and we are creating a script to post the lyrics for his songs. Here is what we have so far:

We have a databse called lyrics with one table also called lyrics the table has three fields, cd_tracks, cd_name, and lyrics.

Now I know how to querry the database and output the information to a page, but what I want is this:

You go to a page that lists all the CD's as links. You click the CD you want and it lists all the Songs also as links. You click the song title you want and it displays the Lyrics to that song. This is the part I am pulling my hair out on. Basically whay we have is each row conatins a CD name a list of songs and the lyrics for each song. So how can I tell it to for iunstance if you click the link for the CD that is stored in row 1 to display the Track list in row one, then display the lyrics stored in rown 1?

I know this is probably simple for most of you guys but i have been at it for 5 days and read several articles and how to's and i have hit a brick wall, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, here's some PHP code....

if ($link) {
    $sql="select * from lyrics where cd_tracks='".$link"'";
    $result(mysql_query, $sql);
    if ($result) {
        $result=mysql_fetch_array($result);
        echo $result['lyrics'];
        }
    }

...is this what you mean?

Got a more specific question?

Yes thats basically the idea, I guess what I am really trying to say is that I need to be able to move around within a specified field via links so like of i have

CD 1
CD 2

CD 3

CD 3 being on row 3 of the table, if the click CD 3 then it needs to swich from showing cd_name to cd_tracks, then once they click they can click a song to take them to the lyrics

Hope i am clear on this Its really hard to explain it lol

I'm thinking that the way you're talking, your database design isn't what I would expect.

IMO, each SONG should have a row, which means that if there's 9 songs on CD1, there will be nine rows which have CD1 as cd_name, each of which would have a track name/number and a lyric field. If what I'm thinking is what you're saying, you've just got 3 rows? How do you fit all those lyrics for seperate songs into one db field?

If your band has released 3 CDs, each with 10 tracks, you should have a 30 row table, I would think.

Then it's just select * from table where CD=cd1, echo track names, etc......

ah thank you very much I see what you are saying now, that helps a bunch. I have it working exactly the way I wanted now.
