Getting printer status

Hi out there,

How can I get the status from a printer in PHP?

We have RedHat 8.0, Apache 1.3.27, PHP 4.3.0.

We use word for merging, but it seems that word "hangs" when the printer is off-line after we merged some documents and wanted the documents to be printed.

that won't be easy. if the printer has its own IP address in your network you could open a connection in PHP. but anyway, you should now how to "talk" with your printer in order to obtain the status-information you need.

another (easier) way: some printers offer a webfrontend for administration. maybe your printer has something like this also. and with some luck you'll find the status of the printer there too. In that case you could connect to the webfrontend with PHP and extract the information from there.
