user authentication woes

I created a user authentication script that validates a user using mysql and php. once the user had been validated it re-directs them to another page using html <META Refresh url> tags........

But when I click the back button it returns to the script that I passed the user variables too. And it re-logs them in. I want the user when they hit the back button to return to the index page. If this is possible using my method could someone please help me. If not/ and or you have a better solution any information is greatly appreciated.

perhaps using sessions would be a better way to do this and instead of redirecting them to a page, just include the page in the script if they are authenticated.
