Query not doing what I want

Hi,

I have a query, but it is not doing what I want. It is:

SELECT close_proj.F1, newproj.File1 FROM close_proj, newproj WHERE newproj.ProjNum = close_proj.ProjNum AND newproj.ProjNum ='100176'

The results I get are:

File1 F1

billion$.ppt Discount Plan.doc

billion$.ppt Dummy1.doc

billion$.ppt Banking.doc

KT_Steps.doc Discount Plan.doc

KT_Steps.doc Dummy1.doc

KT_Steps.doc Banking.doc

I can't really get the columns to work properly here, but... I would like for the left column to only list each document one time and not over and over and the right column not to repeat itself either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 🙂

Do this in your script, e.g. check for a new F1.

Well, not sure if it is possible ... but...
I would like it to look like:

billion$.ppt Discount Plan.doc
KT_Steps.doc Dummy1.doc
BLANK Banking.doc

So, for what I have here, I would like the first column to have 2 files listed and the second column 3 files listed. Possible??

I'd do it with two queries, don't see how to do it all in one:

SELECT distinct close_proj.F1 FROM close_proj, newproj WHERE newproj.ProjNum = close_proj.ProjNum AND newproj.ProjNum ='100176'

SELECT distinct newproj.File1 FROM close_proj, newproj WHERE newproj.ProjNum = close_proj.ProjNum AND newproj.ProjNum ='100176'

Then use a php "while" or "for" loop to fetch the results and build the HTML.

I am almost positive you can do that in just one query. Really two doesn't look nesessary.

Do you know how to do joins? I don't mean just saying

where this=that

I mean a left outer join?

Because you want one row to return NULL and you are saying where this=that, it's not going to work. You need to use a outer join to return rows where one of the fields in the join can be null.

Do some research on using joins in your sql queries. If you get stuck just ask.
