php dummy needs help PLEASE

Hello,

I am so new to php it is not even funny but I am trying but I can not seem to get everything straight in my head I am not and have not ever been a "computer wiz" so bare with me and don't laugh, okay....

My site server has php supposedly installed as a value ap or whatever but do I still have to install it on my p.c. or what. All these tutorials go off talking about stuff I never even heard of I am so lost and been trying to get a php practice script to work all week with no luck.

I upload my files to /usr/local/apache/htdocs normally anyway am I supposed to upload php to different? I feel like I have tried them all nothing works.

I also tried to get a e-novative php program to install but I can't get seem to get it to work, it keeps saying file path not found error 1060. I don't know where I have gone wrong but it seems the things that people say are too simple are the toughest for me whne it comes to htis web site stuff anyways.

If someone could please help me find the right path I know it will probably be something so trivial and small,.... it always is.

If PHP is in the server, you dont' need to install anything on your machine. Just upload files with .php extension.

You need to start at the major basics, the hello world. Just for laughs, see if you can work out what everything does in this script and then that should get you going a bit.

the easiest way to verify if php is actually on your server is to create a file with the following in it

phpinfo();
?>

Then upload to the server (htdocs) and view via a web browser

Or, just create a file with an extension of .php . If PHP is configured on the server, it will display the page. If not, it will try to download the page, I believe.
