Convert binary data to ascii string

Hi

I write script, which reads binary data from serial port. I need to convert this data to ASCII. Any ideas how to do this?

some more specs would be usefull, like :
- what kind of data : imagedata etc.
- some raw data

One device is attached to the serial port and it sends row binary data, i need to extract constantly from this data one particular value.

When I'm connected to the device through hyper terminal i receive the data converted to ASCII, and i can see this value.
