I need help

I'm totally new at this. I've installed my PHP along with MySQL and Apache. Everything is working fine. I can view pages that I was supposed to see. However, when I tried making my own simple php scripts that I copied from a book, the whole php coding shows on the browser. I have this PHP book and I'm just copying what it told me to do and its not working. What am I doing wrong? Thank you.

is this windows? are you looking at it through apache or through the filesystem? what i mean is, are the files accessed:
http://localhost/myfile.php
or
c:\somedir\myfile.php

Thanks for replying. Sorry I wasn't specific. Yes I'm accessing it in localhost.

I don't mean to sound bad saying this, but as I am VERY new to php, one thing I sometimes forget to do is start apache before trying to bring up a page. ( I'm using PHPTriad on a XP box)

your using xp?
xp already has it's own server service... goto windows than system32 then a thing called inetmgr or something like that you'll be in a folder that has the same of few icons but there is 1 or 2 diffrent ones go there select your folder where you put your php scrips and click configure than in the extesions box put .php and browse into the folder where you installed php and goto like bin... i'm not sure but in one of them there are a few programs select one of them i'm not sure which and then click okay and apply.
