First time installation.

I've set the config.inc.php as below but I cannot get into the system with the passowrod, I can without it but I have dont privileges to create a new database

I use HTTP authentication rather than COOKIES

Which means my username and password are NOT in the config file

I don't know if this is less secure than Cookies or Config method

The way i usually do to access mysql for the first time after installation is like this:

1) Set the authentication mode to http.

2) Set the $cfg['Servers'][$i]['controluser'] = 'root';

3) Set the $cfg['Servers'][$i]['controlpass'] = '';

4) Now try to access the mysql thru phpmyadmin and when it asks for user password, enter root for username and leave the password box blank.

5) After logging in, create an actual control user, it says in the phpMyAdmin to how to create a control user and how to set the privilleges for it.

6) Go back and change the config to new control user and the new control password and also always assign a password to the root user.

Yes, that looks about right. I am assuming that you jus did a fresh install of mysql on your system and you dont hae any users setup. Because when mysql is installed, it will have a user called root with no password that has all the privileges.

If that is the case, u shudd be able to access(with the settings that you have) with 'root' as username and a blank password.

Getting this message below when trying to create a database

hmm, well it seems like u are able to logon to phpmyadmin, but its not making sense if it says 'No privileges', cuz the root user is supposed to have all the privileges. Make sure ur logging in as the root user and if u changed the password, use the new password othawise use a blank password.

Well since phpmyadmin is not giving you a 'Not enough privileges' error, I m guessin that there is something wrong in ur query to create the database or table. If u paste it here, im sure somebody can find the error in it.

And no, u dun have to enter the info on each block of config settings in the config.php file, they can be used to connect to multiple mySQL servers.

I think you set the wrong parameters! You set "root" and no password for MySQL control user. But it has to be set for the MySQL user. Leave the MySQL control user settings blank.

Yes, I'm sure that this is the mistake.
That's at least what I did in my phpMyAdmin. And it works well.
With phpMyAdmin 2.4.0 you can set a new username/password. Afterwards you have to change the config.php, of course.
