Functions for connecting to a spreadsheet

Gidday,

I tried to install MS Access '97 on my win2k computer last night but I'm getting errors about there bieng no license for it, when there is, and all the other programs run fine. So Instead of using access I want to use excell for some of my PHP coding. Problem is, I'm very new to this sort of stuff.

I wonder if anyone here would be nice enough to give me a tiny snipplet of code that just connects to the spreadsheet and reads in a rom/cell and closes? Or, any good tutorials on the subject?
