Inserting text with magic characters...

Hello All,
I have a problem that I was not able to resolve.
I need to insert large blocks of text into MySQL DB, but I was running into problem if the text had quotes or apostrophies.
Say I want to insert this:

blah I'm blah blah "to" blah blah
blah blah don't "he" blah blah

And lets say the variable $blah holds this string.

How can I insert this into a DB without getting errors regarding "magic" characters? Do I need to add backslashes infront of all ' and "? And then what is the syntax to insert into the DB? Do I wrap the variable with single quotes or double quotes?

you should add slashes -

$blah = addslashes($blah);

$blah = htmlspecialchars($blah);
