Problem starting mySQL server

I downloaded MySQL server last night and it was running perfectly all night without any problems. But this morning, I booted my computer to find that the service starts, runs for about a second and then stops again.

I have been through the manual and reistalled the service etc, but to no avail. There is nothing else running on the port (I telnetted into it and couldn't connect) so I can't figure out what the problem is.

I am running windows 2000 professional with MySQL 4.0.12-Win. I do not have any service packs installed at the moment - I will install them now, but I don't think that will solve the problem. Any help would be most appreciated.

Edit: Also, I am using the MySQL Control Centre if that makes any difference.

I'm not an expert at this as I usually use my host's PHP/MySQL, but did you try starting it manually from the command prompt? If so, what did you type?

Okay, this is what I did:

// I put it in code form so its easier to read
D:\MySQL\Bin> mysqld-nt --install
Service successfully started.

D:\MySQL\Bin> net start mysql
The MySQL service is starting.
The MySQL service was started successfully.

This says the service is started, so I go to the Services control thingy in administrative tools, find the service and notice it has stopped again. I try to connect to the sql server with MySQL Control Centre to be told it can't find the server. I even try telnetting into it on port 3306 and still there is no server running.

So in the services I try to start it again and it does, but only for a second before it stops again :mad: I try starting it from the MySQL admin to have the same problem. I installed service pack 3 just now and still have the same problem. Any Ideas?

I have exactly the same pb. This night, the MySQL service in Windows 2000 stopped. I reinstalled Mysql (i tried 4.0.12 and 4.0.13), the service starts and then stops again.

Does anyone know what to do ?

Config :
Windows 2000 Server SP3
MySQL 4.0.12-Win or MySQL 4.0.13-Win

I found the solution to this problem.

First, you have to install Mysql in the standard location (c:\mysql)

Then, delete the my.ini file in the Winnt directory or replace his content with :

[mysqld]
basedir = c:\mysql
datadir = c:\mysql\data

Now, it's working !

It seems that Winmsqladmin replaced the content of this file, preventing Mysql to start.
