preg_match-ing for "£"

Greetings, All!

I'm having a heck of a time with some code designed to check a price-string that is handed to it for the presence of the British Pound sign!

I've been using:

if (preg_match("/$currency_symbol[$y]/",$price_cell).... and echo statements prior to the statement confirm that $currency_symbol[$y] is equal to "£" and that $price cell is "£4.99".

I've even tried substituting $currency_symbol[$y] with "£" within the first parameter of the preg_match statement.

Did several Google-searches to try to find anybody who's had a similar problem, but apparently Google throws out the "£".

Checked php.net for preg_match. Someone there mentioned using double-escapes prior to doing a similar preg_match for a "$", so I tried this for my "£", but it didn't work.

Any advice?

The following worked for me

<? 

$price = "£4.99";

echo $price . "<br>";

if (preg_match("/£/", $price)) {
   echo "E found";
} else {
   echo "no e found";
}

?>

And I even tried replacing the £ using str_replace() and it worked just fine.

Yeah, I see that.

I realized a few minutes ago that the price it's reading is actually screen-scraped HTML, so the pound-sign is actually html encoded.

I'm at my day-job, so when I get a free minute I'll translate that into the actual pound-sign and see if it works.

What I actually typed above was the ASCII code for that sign.

ampersand-pound-163-semicolon, I believe.

if u are trying to type the actual ASCII code for the symbol use

& instead of jus &. so type 'ampersand-pound-163-semicolon'

u type:

ampersand-amp;-pound-163-semicolon

that will give you

£

What's the problem, or why do you need to do this? (I'm just curious. I've rarely ever had to do this).

Anyways, you could use str_replace()

$string = str_replace($symbol, "£", $string);

where $symbol is the symbol written out as

ampersand-amp;-pound-163-semicolon

and $string is the string you want to convert it in. PHP does have a function called html_special_chars(). I've never used it, but I think it's for converting the E symbol to it's ampersand-amp;-pound-163-semicolon form, not vise-versa.

I may not get the chance to try it for another hour, though. Busy here.

As for what I'm doing is creating a currency convertor. Takes user input as for what currency to convert to. Scans in some price values from elsewhere. These values may or may not already be in the currency type requested.

Based on the currency symbol that the script detects (via preg_match), it then either performs the conversion or does not (when the incoming currency symbol matches that of the currency type that the user has requested).
