PHP and Uploading Files

Hi ALL

I have a site which enables users to upload files and them share them with other users.

To protect the files from any prying eyes, I have created a folder outside of the normal web root. EG:

uploads/users

What I want to do is create a new folder in the users folder each time I add a new user. The problem is that I receive a permissions error when trying to create the folder, EG.:

uploads/users/userX (X is a unique number)

Works in Windows, but NOT under Linux.

My question is under what user is the folder created outside of the web root? It is possible?

Try chmodding it (the directory) to 777 and test again. Then refine the chmod to whatever you need.

Are you the Admin of the server? If you are then you can execute the linux commands to chmod, chgrp or chown on the folders you create.

Problem is, if you create the folder as the current owner of the directory (you) or the owner of the webserver, then the new user (assuming they exist on the linux server??) can not access the folder.

Unless you are creating the owner in a db and using a PHP script to manage who accesses what folder, then CHMOD should work.

REMEMBER, CHMOD 777 is RWE for all users and discouraged...
