punctuation problem in <textarea> ??

I'm supposed to research a problem that is supposed to be PHP 4 related. It was not an issue with PHP 3.

We have an e-mail form that includes a <textarea> field. It seems that whenever punctuation is used like an apostrophe ('), the actual text of the e-mail contains \'

Is this something related to PHP 4?? Does anyone know the workaround for this??

php deliberatly delimits apostrophe's because they cause problems within scripts at times, use the strip() function to strip the apostrophe's out of the textarea

the directive in the php.ini file that controls this behaviour is "magic_quotes_gpc".

no idea if or with what version the default changed, though - you might dig up something at www.php.net.
