Assign Var Name From Another Var

How would you go about assigning a variable name with the value from another variable? Ex:

$var1 = "var";
$"$var1"2 = "cool";

Obviously that isn't exactly how I'm going to use it but I think you get the point. I'm trying to create a self assigning variable name. There have been a few areas I could use this. Any help would be great!

that would create a variable named jon with a value of cool

There may be another way, but this works

$var1 = "jon";
$var1 .= "2";

$$var1 = "cool";

Creates the variable jon2 with a value of cool

PHP is so much easier to use than C++, with no var types and things.
