Installation Issue

I am new to PHP sites, so this is probably easy for someone out there.

It was my understanding, that when installing like PHPNuke it has to be under a sub directory, such as http://www.sitename.com/php/

Is this correct?
And if so, how do u make it load when a user goes to http://www.sitename.com ?

if you want it when someone types in www.site.com, then just make an index.html or index.php page with this code and redirect it to www.site.com/php/page.php like so - replace your information with the example i have here
