mail() not working

I couldn't find any reference to this in previous posts, and I couldn't refine the search well enough on Google to get anything relevant, so maybe you guys can help.

My friend is setting up php on a server, but the mail function is not working. His php.ini file is still on the default settings. What else might we check to find what is preventing the mail functions?

If you can use sendmail your mail work it!!!

cat /etc/passwd | mail [e-mail]

That's the problem I just stated. It doesn't work. That is the whole point.

Verify sendmail.cf this is the file where you setup the command mail.
