File count?

Is there any functions or ways to count the number of files within a folder? I'm fairly new to php and am trying to build my own photo gallery. I wanted to know if there is anyway to count the number of jpg files and get their names within a specific folder. Can anyone lend a helping hand? Thanks 🙂
