Pay For Advice?

Hello,

I saw a thread from the past asking if PHP Builder should charge all members to post. That is pretty stupid.
I think the question SHOULD be, if you are seeking advice, would you be willing to pay a small fee, and if you are providing the advice, would you want a bit of money to do so?

I'm not looking for criticism, this isn't my question, I'm rephrasing another user's question so that it will make sense.

The idea of paying for advice just dosn't mesh well with a forum. If you run a consulting firm, you survive by selling your advice, but joining a forum is completely and totally voluntary, and there is no pressure to provide input on any thread.

Beyond that, making users pay for advice would strongly discourage new programmers exploring the langauge, and thereby stunt the growth of an allready wonderful language.

There's my two cents. 😛

I'm just expanding on to the past thread, as it seems the starter wanted every type of user to pay, which is not really fair.

I spend plenty of time in boards like this (too much :rolleyes: ).
I don't think I would help more for payment, I really like to share
my (limited) knowledge, a thankful user is reward enough!!

As return service I expect help, if I'm stuck, which happens from
time to time 😃
(being a provider : user = 20 : 1)

Anyway, I consider this as a kind of little hobby and it doesn't hurt.

One point would be indeed desirable: "noobs" wouldn't ask so many
really dumb questions and think before posting.

I could see how a system where you do something like send coupons for free pizza or something through paypal, purely on the honor system. If someone answers your questions, you're free to send them a pizza, if not, no obligation.

ermm.. i totally agree with the voluntary part..

i guess, if ya insist being paid for giving advice,
then start a consultation firm or something...

knowledge should be free..
only the utilization of the knowledge..
like building an application.. or a system
(which normally comes with blood, sweat and tears..) should get it's respect
(in term of payment, or copyrights)

but still, it wouldnt hurt to say thank you either..
to people who helped you out, or give some suggestion..
depends.. if you wanna give em money
(if you seems to have plenty of it.. or dunno what to do with it..)
then i guess it'll be okay..

Paying for advice.... only if I am desperate, and no hair left I think...

But knowledge and free speech should never be chargeable, nor should anyone who frequents a forum expect monetary payment for advice. They have the choice whether or not to answer a question that is only asked, the answer for which is not demanded of anyone.

The pizza idea is good however... mines a Hawaiian if anyone asks... 😃

I started here about 4 months ago asking nothing but questions and getting nothing but great answers so I have stayted around and continue to surf the forum to help further my own knowledge and share some of the knowledge I have recieved.

I think that if a user has a good experience here they will stay around and help others as it is nothing more then reaffirming there own skill IMO

I intend to ask and answer questions - as best as I can. I personally do not expect money etc.

I belong to another forum where I design sigs (signatures) for the members. As of today I hava made over 400 signatures... for free of course.

Why free?

Because I like it and I want to.

If it is just advice, then I don't mind contributing for free, because it helps create a community that I can then use myself.

I wouldn't do the coding for free, but guidance is good.
