parsing incrementing numbers

I have several directories of images that change constantly and I want to show them on a webpage in incremental numbers.

how can I make something like http://mysite.com/[1-23].gif work so I can just show gifs 1 through whatever is the last number of the highest image count?

not .gif no, cos it will think it's an image as opposed to a php page.

why not do

www.mysite.com/images.php?start=1&end=20

and then use $GET['start'] and $GET['end'] to find out where to start and end? or is that too untidy for you?

actually would be easier to link with a URL such as http://www.mygallery.com/joe/[1-25].gif (plus google will INDEX it better than using a ? variable)
