displaying a full database in reverse order.

This is a dumb question but, Im tring to display my database in reverse order, not sorting on any particular column or title. I coded a rough bulletin board but I'm displaying the posts in the order they were added so the oldest posts end up at the top of the page. Is there a way to post this in reverse order so the newest ones post first? I think this can be done but I'm not sure how?

Hopefully, you are using an id field that is automatically incremented when you add a new row, right? Simply use:

SELECT * from FORUMDB ORDER BY POSTID DESC

... or something like that, depending on the column names and the columns you want to return.

You have a primary key column that does AUTO INCREMENT, right?

$sql = "SELECT whatever_columns_you_want FROM the_table_name ORDER BY primary_key_column_name DESC";

that will give you the result you all looking for.

I knew I was going to have to redesign my database, shit. I obviously wasn't thinking when I started coding my bulletin board cause I left that out. Thanks for the help.

Brad, if you are storing the date the articles were posted, then you could always do a descending sort on the date column...

But yes, 99.9% of the time, when you create a table, you should create a primary key ID field that is auto-incremented. Sometimes the best lessons are learned the hard way 🙂
