sort and remove blank

Hi guys I'm new to php and have been looking round a bunch of sites for help on this but can't seem to find anything so any help would be greatly appricated.

I have a mysql talbe with a colum called cagegories it contains sub categories seperated by > I split them up using the following statement

list($subcat1,$subcat2,$subcat3,$subcat4,$subcat5)= split (">", $catagories, 5);

But now i want to sort subcat3 alphabetically and romove blanks but this has me really stumpped 😕

What about running some kind of check/if statement on the variables $subcat1, $subcat2, $subcat3, $subcat4 and $subcat5 prior to assigning them to the array and then only doing so if they are loaded ??
