$_POST vars

I've got a <SELECT> in my form with multiple enabled so that people can click multiple options within the list. My question is, how do I get access to the choices they made? Are they stored in an array so that I can access them like this?

$_POST['test_var'][0] for the first one. I've tried several options, but nothing seems to work. Thanks for any help.

<select name="test_var[]">
......

then use $_POST['test_var'][0] ....[1]....so on to access your variables
