Career Day?

I am hosting a career day for some kids that are interested in web development. My job is a blast for me, but I worry that it might be boring for a few 14 year-olds to watch.

My thoughts are to take them around to the different departments (I work at a hosting company) and then take them home to work on a group web design project.

Have any of you done this before or does anyone have any ideas?

Although it's been a long time since I was 14 🙂 - I think as long as you make it pertinent and in their sphere of interest, you will have them hooked.

I think if your project has something to do with music or them being able to voice their opinions about something you will be safe. It seems to me that when I was that age, I just really wanted to be heard. So maybe they could put together a message board about something, or a web directory of music sites, or a voting/rating site about movies, amusement parks- whatever.

Again, this is just my 2 cents- and I'm an old lady of 31 so what do I know? 🙂

You could let them make a site about pokemon, drgonball z, whatever they like. Let them search the inet for images and stuff. Then let them put it together with some links to related sites.
This way the'll look at other sites that they are interested to, might give them ideas for their own page. And with creating a page, they'll learn how they've got to put it together, and because its a subject they like, they spent more time on it. In turn they'll learn more.

I'm not a teacher or anything related so I could be COMPLETELY wrong, but it might work.

Anyways, use a topic that they like or they'll lose attention in 5 mins...

Make them work with many pictures.
I don't think most 14 year olds are interested in backend stuff.
I could be wrong, though.
