PHP Mail() w/ Sendmail

OK, I've been fighting withthis for a couple of days and hopefully someone can help.

I have a form that is filled out and then the info fwd via the mail() function. Now the twist is that this is running on my own server and the MTA I'm using is Sendmail....

Sendmail will not relay the mail from this function. It keeps giving me the error that localhost times out and that it's from nobody@localhost ?????

Anyways I have 4 headers set for the mail function

$headers .= "from: ........ ";
$headers .= "reply-to: .... ";
$headers .=" Return-path: ....... ";

so my problem is I can't determine whether this is a sendmail problem or something to do with my code or a combo of the two.... Hopefully someone can she some light on this... I can post more code from my mail.php file if it will help.

First use a simple script, can be found here: http://www.php.net/mail
If a simple script doesn't work, it's sendmail, otherwise there's something wrong with your code. I don't use/havent used sendmail myself, so i can't help you on that part.

If 'localhost' times out, you've got a fairly serious name resolutions problem, I'd say.

Not that it can't be fixed easily.

How are you on the console?

Can you ping localhost by name? If not, start by checking your 'hosts' file for a 127.0.0.1 - localhost entry.

Is localhost added to the list of relay-domains? I think it should send mail from localhost by default...

Perhaps user 'nobody' isn't allowed access to the sendmail daemon.

What's your maillog say?

Well My mail log says it trys to relay from localhost... [e-mail]...

I tried a simple mail function just a one liner and it didn't work so I think it's probably sendmail...

In my truster-users, relay-domains, and access.db @, localhost, nobody, and [e-mail] are all allowed to relay so I'm not too sure what to try now...

It is a sendmail problem so I guess it's not really a question for this thread.. But if you know of anything to try please let me know!

Apr 16 17:55:46 server sendmail[1729]: h3H1tk4k001729: from=nobody, size=307, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<[e-mail]>, relay=nobody@localhost

The above is the message I get in my maillog after the form is first sent then about 5 min later I recieve a timed out error!!

Any help on this above message is appreciated I think if I can get sendmail to think it's being sent from someone other then nobody I'd be OK but not sure how to fix that.

check a couple of things in your Sendmail Setup

make sure that
localhost.localdomain
localhost

are listed as local domains

Also, make sure that there are entries like this

localhost.localdomain RELAY
localhost RELAY
127.0.0.1 RELAY

in the /etc/mail/access file

I'm not sure this will fix your problem, but verify that these entries are in there. Mine weren't and I had similar problems.
