Bounce email check

How can I check for bounced emails via php? I know that the postmaster gets a copy of bounced emails but what headers can I set so every bounced email that is sent from my account verification script goes to a certain account. I want to be able to send out account verification emails and if it bounces back FLAG the account.

This is the best (and only) way I know to check if an e-mail address really exists. If there are any others, then feel free to share them.
