samba issues

this is really starting to confuse me.

I have a share on a linux machine in the office, on which is a public share, used as a testbed for sites (php/mysql) that we develop.

Now + then, i have a file open in my favourite code editor, and do my occasional Alt-F-S (file save).... i then open the browser and test.... but shock horror, the file is empty.

The editor still has the content in it, so i save it to the desktop, delete the one off the linux box, and copy the file back to the linux machine.

And it works.

But, i cant just copy the file over the old one, i have to delete it first.

Also, if the file is anything near or greater than 20k, it doesnt want to copy, giving windows (in my case NT, in others 2000) a 'not enough disk space' error.

Interesting, seeming as even NT is reporting a free 4.3 gig (which concurs with redhat (8.0).

A couple of possible problems. One is to turn of oplocks. Oplocks let Samba appear to lock when it really isn't locking completely. Sometimes having them on results in other folks writing to your file. I doubt this is the problem, just a possibility.

Test for bad memory, no server can overcome bad memory. www.memtest86.com

Check your samba logs to see what it has to say about this, as well as system logs on the server.
