Username & Password

Todays dilemma is:

I have a page where people enter their username and password as part of an entry to a database, not as part of a login.

I need to confirm the username and password are valid and connected.

I have tried several different formats of scripts but keep getting error messages.

If someone has a basic few lines it would be appreciated.

post the variables to a new page and then do your database connection stuff, followed by:

  $result = mysql_query($sql);
  $num_results = mysql_num_rows($result);
  if($num_results != 1)
  {
    echo "There has been a login error.  Please try again.";

  {

  }
}

Something interesting I get a blank white page. Any ideas?
